RoHS
Compliant Metering Transformers
What is RoHS ?
The
RoHS Directive is a standard that restricts the use of environmentally
hazardous materials in electrical and electronic components
and systems. Under this Restrictions on Hazardous Substances
(RoHS) Directive, hundreds of thousands of products
currently produced and marketed by the industry are becoming
obsolete. It mandates that manufacturers of electrical and
electronic components must determine what products they
have to re-design to remove certain toxic materials. Components
that are not in compliance and systems that includes such
components cannot be sold into European Union countries.
Countries that are members of the European Union must ensure
that, new electrical and electronic equipments put on the
market do not contain the listed hazardous materials of
lead ("lead free"), cadmium, mercury, hexavalent
chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) or polybrominated
diphenyl ethers (PBDE.
AYA Instruments is now offering an
extensive line of metering current transformers that are
RoHS compliant. They do not contain the hazardous materials
listed in the RoHS Directive.
AYA offers both Closed-Core and Split-Core
metering current transformers with models that meet UL/CSA,
ANSI Standards. They are available in either Commercial
Class for use with Ammeters or ANSI and IEC Metering Class
for use with current meters, WATT Meters, VAR Meters and
relays where higher accuracy is required. The RoHS Compliant
transformers are GREEN in color as well as in structure.
The 25 counties of the European Union,
including its 10 new Eastern European member countries,
Japan and China, are in the process of implementing the
RoHS standard to restrict the use of environmentally hazardous
materials in electrical and electronic components and systems.
This will have a considerable impact on equipment manufacturers
and distributors doing business internationally who will
have to comply with these new directives.
Contact AYA Instruments to obtain additional
information about the RoHS compliant metering transformers.
The AYA line of RoHS compliant metering
current transformers is very extensive. Most models are
available with either voltage or current output signals
having full scales ranging from 1 Ampere to 8,000 Amperes.
They are designed for use in electrical substations, in
power monitoring with analyzers, recorders, loggers and
multimeters in applications requiring continuous measurement
of currents in electric circuits. Such requirements are
common in monitoring power quality and loads by utilities,
electric equipment manufacturers and heavy equipment operators
that are required to monitor currents in the power lines.
WHAT ARE CURRENT TRANSFORMERS?
An
AC current transformer is a special transformer that does
not have a primary coil. The conductor whose current is
to be measured acts as the primary coil when it is placed
inside the magnetic path of the core. A Split-Core Current
Transformer is a special type of current transformer. It
enables the user to "open" the magnetic path in
order to snap the transformer clamp around a conductor for
performing accurate current measurements without having
to interrupt the current flow in the conductor.
The signal obtained from an AC current
transformer has the same waveshape as the current being
measured. However, current transformers introduce measurement
errors of amplitude, phase and waveshape due to frequency
range limitations. The AYA clamps are designed to provide
the lowest possible errors by using the highest quality
magnetic core and the state-of-the-art technology.
